Create Space

Yesterday, I sat down with a veteran teacher to prepare for our upcoming mission.

For the past two months, we have been focused on implementing a new reading curriculum and this was our first one-on-one coaching meeting strictly focused on math.

I asked her, "what are you most excited about teaching in the next mission?"

She paused and said, "To be honest, I am never excited about teaching math. When I teach math, it brings up a lot of bad experiences from when I was in school."

"I understand. Math classrooms have not always been safe places to make mistakes. How can I best support you in this upcoming mission."

"Can we practice lessons together before I teach my students? If I have a question during the lesson, can I ask you?"

Trust teachers. They know what they need. They need you to create the space so that they can ask.
